Life Skills

Developing practical skills and responsibility to navigate everyday life and build a strong foundation for independence.

Independence begins with confidence. Our life skills program will provide hands-on learning in financial management, cooking, household care, communication, and decision-making. Through practical guidance, young adults will build the skills to make informed choices, overcome everyday challenges, and take ownership of their futures.

What will I learn in life skills training?

Our life skills training will focus on practical, hands-on experiences that prepare young adults to manage daily responsibilities, make informed decisions, and navigate life with greater confidence.

  • Financial Literacy & Budgeting: Managing money, understanding credit, saving, and planning for expenses.
  • Cooking & Nutrition: Meal planning, grocery shopping, food preparation, and kitchen safety.
  • Household Management: Cleaning, laundry, basic home maintenance, and keeping an organized living space.
  • Everyday Responsibilities: Time management, communication, problem-solving, and making responsible decisions.

How does life skills training fit with the rest of the program?

Life skills training helps residents build the practical abilities needed for confident, independent living. Through hands-on practice, they learn to prepare meals, manage a budget, shop responsibly, maintain a home, do laundry, care for belongings, and establish healthy routines. With guidance from staff and mentors, residents strengthen planning, problem-solving, time management, communication, and decision-making skills. By applying these skills in real situations, they develop lasting habits and greater readiness for employment, education, healthy relationships, and independent living.

How Will My Progress Be Measured?

Growth looks different for everyone. Through individual goals, practical milestones, and regular check-ins, residents can recognize their achievements, identify areas for improvement, and take pride in how far they've come.

What help do I get when I'm ready to move out?

Preparing to move out is about more than finding a place to live. Abraham's House will offer permanent housing options that provide greater independence while still offering structure and support for residents who need it. These less-controlled housing arrangements are designed to help young adults build confidence and practice independent living at their own pace. Residents will receive support with understanding rental agreements, managing monthly expenses, maintaining a household, and accessing ongoing resources. Our goal is to provide a stable next step for young adults who are ready for more independence but may still benefit from guidance and accountability.

Life Skills, in general

General information, not specific to Abraham’s house foundation.

Living independently involves more than cooking and managing money, It means building confidence, solving problems, adapting to challenges, and taking responsibility for your future. For young adults, these skills foster stability, self-reliance, and accomplishment, each one a step toward building a life of their own.

Young adults transitioning from foster care or homelessness face the responsibilities of independent living earlier than their peers, sometimes without the same support systems. Developing practical life skills can help bridge that gap, build confidence, and create a stronger foundation for the future.
